Anna’s Hand Cut Donuts Even with the considerable disadvantage of being the final stop of the day on our doughnut route, Anna’s boasts some of the tastiest treats we encounter and a familial atmosphere. “I know everyone who walks in, I know what they’re getting,’’ says Eleni Keskinidis, who has owned the shop with her husband, Kosta, for 23 years (it has been open 45 years). Using trans fat-free oil, the couple bakes fresh doughnuts each morning, highlighted by black raspberry twists, marble crullers, and delicious cake doughnut holes. 2056 Centre St., West Roxbury, 617-323-2680 ($1.10 each; $12/dozen)

enchantedengland:

“The Shambles” reputed by some to be the “best preserved medieval street in Europe” lies within York, a walled city in county North Yorkshire, northwest England. This magical Dickensian street dates back to the 1300s.
A “Shambles” in medieval days indicated an open-air slaughterhouse; and this was a street packed with butchers, as well as the discarded intestines, dung, and blood of their livelihood. Apparently this was so unappealing even amonst the medieval folk the word “shambles” evolved to indicate a great nasty mess. But this narrow little street is quite adorable and charming now, isn’t it? It is.

Boston-area rents are hitting new heights - with the median price recently reaching $1,665 a month - as the vacancy rate falls to the lowest level in almost a decade, new data show.

…Boston is the fifth-most-expensive rental market in the country, behind Fairfield County in Connecticut, Westchester County in New York, San Francisco, and New York City, according to Reis.

The vacancy rate for Boston-area apartments dropped to 4.4 percent in the second quarter of the year, down from 6.2 percent a year earlier, and is the lowest it has been since the end of 2002, according to Reis.

RentalBeast.com reports that availability in some neighborhoods such as Beacon Hill and the Back Bay is even tighter - at about 1.2 percent. Rents are also higher, with a two-bedroom in the Back Bay averaging $2,658, compared to $2,316 in Charlestown.

Rents hit record high in Boston area - The Boston Globe

Shady plans coming to Hingham’s Main Street and Jackass Park
- Hingham’s Shade Tree Committee is hoping to change the landscape of some parts of town with a plan to replace dozens of ornamental trees with larger, shade trees on Main Street and in Jackass Park.

wait are you for real that there’s a Jackass Park

Nobody Smart Wants to Live in New England

The WSJ reports that states all over New England are launching marketing campaigns, internship programs, college comedy tours—anything to keep young college grads from fleeing New England for other, better places. Well, it won’t work. Any idiot can do the math on New England:

Plus: Quaint. Minus: Quaint.

Plus: Fall foliage, apple picking. Minus: Your lifeless body was found frozen atop Mount Washington after you went out for a quick October hike.

Plus: Skiing. Minus: Eight months a year of icy hell, virtually entombing you in a pre-modern lifestyle of woodchopping and indoor-huddling.

Plus: You can spot a wild black bear from your back yard. Minus: He ate you.

Plus: Boston. Minus: Fuck Boston.
